I've been playing electric guitar for about 15 years. This is my first steel string acoustic. I bought it used a couple of years ago. The S6 Folk has a smaller body compared to other steel string acoustic guitars and it's comfortable for fingerstyle playing. According to Seagull, this model is based on the dimensions of a classical guitar. These guitars are handmade in Canada and Seagull is owned by Godin.
I looked around for a steel string acoustic for a couple of months and almost bought the Seagull Grand which is even smaller, but went for the Folk when I saw a good deal on eBay. The guitar was barely used and came with the original case. I did try the S6 Folk at a store near my place before buying it online, and was very surprised by its sound quality. I was not able to find other guitars around this price range that sounded similar or better than this Seagull. Sure, it's not a Martin, but the cheapest Martin costs at least twice as much if not more, and the sound, to me, was not that different. The Seagull is not a fancy guitar, but it sounds pretty good. I did have to lower the action a little bit, but almost every guitar needs some adjustment.
You have to be careful when playing this guitar though, it has a solid cedar top that scratches and chips easily, and I mean you could scratch it just with your fingernails while playing. Mine is pretty scratched already...
I've been very happy with this guitar. If it got lost or stolen I would probably get a Seagull, but a different model just to try out a different guitar. I would recommend it to anybody looking for a decent and inexpensive steel string acoustic. |
